UAE social media users ‘showing sympathy or support’ for Qatar will face punishment

dubai247   After a major diplomatic rift between Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, all members of the powerful Gulf Cooperation Council; Social media in the Gulf has been brimming with Tweets both criticizing and celebrating the breaking of ties with Qatar. After cutting off diplomatic ties, cutting off of Qatari broadcasters and suspension of flights to Qatar, UAE Public Prosecutor Hamad al-Shamsi has said in a statement on Wednesday that, Social media users in the United Arab Emirates who “show sympathy” for Qatar could face from 3 to 15 years of jail time, alongside a minimum fine of 500,000 dirhams.  UAE residents have been strongly advised to be careful about any opinions on this matter posted on social media.
