Things to know about Dubai before visiting
Visiting Dubai? Here’s the important information that will help you enjoy and have a peaceful visit this year!
1- Ladies Priority Area:
Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram are the most convenient transportation for tourist and residences. Not many are aware of the “Women and Children Cabin” where men can be fined for AED100 for entering or even passing through it. It is mostly at the end of the metro and tram, but you can see the marking on the platform so that you wait for the transport at the right spot to prevent panicking as the metro halts for 15 -20 seconds only at the platform.
2- Ladies Night:
Every Tuesday you will find a lot of “Ladies Nights” happening around the city. Many of the nightclubs offer free drinks for ladies yet you will have to confirm this before you choose your venue for the day! Tune yourself to full-on party and dance mode!
3- What you can wear:
Although you will find a lot of women covering their heads and face, it is not a must for everyone by law. But in most public places women are expected to cover their shoulders and up to the knees at least. Wearing strappy tops is offensive in Dubai shopping malls and you may get a warning. Also, very tight and/or low-cut t-shirts are considered offensive in public places. Not to forget, visiting government offices you must be more conservative. Men are also not allowed to wear boxer shorts or t-shirts with offensive slogans and gestures. This is could get you in trouble. But you can wear your swimsuits at the beach. Appropriate clothing is very significant in this part of the world thus it is one of the most important things to know about Dubai before visiting .
4-Drinking in public places:
Drinking is allowed in Dubai but Dubai’s licensing laws require venues serving alcohol be attached to hotels or a private clubs. It is illegal to drink on the street or in a public space. The legal drinking age is 21. You will not find alcohol for purchase in the shops. However, visitors to Dubai can bring in the following goods free of duty. Gifts with a value of not more than AED 3,000 or 400 cigarettes OR 500g of tobacco OR 50 cigars. Up to 4 litres of alcohol OR 48 cans of beer (each not exceeding 355 ml).
5- Public display of affection:
It is not well-tolerated by Dubai to show affection in the public. Holding hands for married couples is fine. Sex outside marriage is illegal and sharing a room will land you in Dubai Police cell. Dancing is allowed but only in licensed clubs or at home. People may get warnings for this so it is one of the important things to know about Dubai before visiting.
It’s a crime to live as a homosexual and you could be jailed for a year or more.
7- Visiting in the month of Ramadan:
Ramadan is a holy month when Muslims observe fasts so eating, drinking or smoking in public from sunrise to sunset is not allowed. The restaurants will also remain closed however, hotels do serve food during these hours. Also, you must dress modestly especially in this month.
8- Shaking hands with women:
Men should not shake hands with Emirati (local) women as it is against their culture.
9- Traffic rules in Dubai:
You will find speed radars on almost every road, and I must say they are really smart. So stick to the speed limit, do not tailgate and obey traffic rules else you will be losing a good amount of money!
10- Plan your trip using RTA Services:
